EMDR Therapy
EMDR therapy, from a room where you already feel safe
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps distressing memories feel like the past instead of the present. We offer it by secure video to teens and adults in Pennsylvania and Georgia.

What it is
A way to process what the mind hasn't finished processing
Some experiences don't settle into memory the way ordinary days do. A smell, a tone of voice, or a stretch of highway can bring the fear back as if it's happening now. EMDR is a structured therapy designed to help the brain finish processing those memories, so they can be remembered without the same flood of distress.
During processing, you hold part of the memory in mind while following a back-and-forth rhythm called bilateral stimulation. In an office, that's often the therapist's moving hand. By video, it's a dot sliding across your screen, alternating tones through headphones, or a simple self-tapping technique your clinician teaches you.
EMDR is recommended for post-traumatic stress by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Research on EMDR by video is still growing, which is one reason we put extra care into preparation and grounding before any processing begins.
Who it may help
EMDR may help if you're dealing with
EMDR was developed for trauma, and that's still where the evidence is strongest. Clinicians also use it for other problems rooted in painful experiences.
- PTSD after an accident, assault, combat, or loss
- Memories that intrude when you don't want them to
- Panic or anxiety tied to a specific event
- Nightmares and poor sleep after something frightening
- Long-held beliefs like "I'm not safe" or "It was my fault"
- Grief that feels frozen at the moment you got the news
What to expect
What EMDR by video looks like
EMDR follows a set of phases, and most of them don't involve processing memories. The early sessions are about getting to know you and making sure you have ways to steady yourself.
Set up your space
You'll join from a private room with headphones and a screen big enough to follow a moving dot, ideally a laptop or tablet. We'll also agree on what happens if the connection drops mid-session.
History and preparation
Your clinician learns what brings you in and which memories to work with, then teaches grounding skills you can use on your own between sessions.
Processing in short sets
You focus on one part of a memory while following the rhythm for a short set, then pause and notice what comes up. You can stop at any point.
Ending each session steady
Every session closes with time to settle, so you aren't left raw when the call ends. Over several sessions, the memory usually feels less charged.
Our approach
How we approach EMDR
We don't rush to the hardest memory. Preparation takes as long as it needs to, and some clients spend several sessions building skills before processing starts. If substance use, ongoing safety concerns, or dissociation are part of the picture, we'll talk openly about timing and whether EMDR is the right first step.
Because you're at home rather than in an office, we pay attention to what happens after the session ends. We'll plan the hour afterward with you, whether that means a walk, a call with a friend, or simply a quiet room.
